Start with safe, simple checks

Set the thermostat to COOL and lower the setpoint several degrees below the room temperature. Confirm the fan is set to AUTO unless you are intentionally circulating air. Replace a visibly dirty filter with the correct size and type, and make sure return grilles and supply registers are not blocked.

Ice means the system needs attention

Turn cooling off. If the indoor fan can operate safely, FAN ON may help thaw the coil. Do not chip or pry ice from the equipment.

Why a complete diagnosis matters

Low airflow, an electrical failure, a control problem, a dirty component, or a refrigeration-system issue can create similar symptoms. Adding refrigerant without finding why the system is low is not a complete repair. Testing the full system helps identify the cause and any condition that contributed to it.

Schedule service when the outdoor unit will not run, breakers trip repeatedly, ice returns, water threatens the property, the system makes unusual noises, or the temperature continues to rise. Tell the technician what you observed and what changed before the problem began.
