The seven warning signs
A single observation does not always identify the failed part, but these conditions deserve attention.
- Product or box temperature is rising
- The compressor runs nearly all the time
- Ice appears on the evaporator or around a doorway
- Fans sound different or stop
- Water appears around the equipment
- Doors, gaskets, or closers do not seal properly
- The unit cycles, alarms, or resets unexpectedly
Protect inventory before troubleshooting
Limit door openings and document the time and temperature. Move product according to your approved procedure. Do not bypass safety controls, chip ice from coils, or repeatedly reset breakers. Those actions can create additional damage or safety concerns.
Why temperature alone does not identify the repair
Airflow, dirty coils, fan operation, door condition, controls, defrost, drainage, electrical components, refrigerant circuit conditions, ambient temperature, and equipment load can all affect box temperature. A technician needs operating information and system testing to narrow the cause.
What to provide when you call
If available, share the equipment manufacturer and model, normal and current temperature, when the problem began, recent work, alarm or error information, and whether fans or compressors are operating. Clear information helps prioritize the response.
Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I add refrigerant when a cooler is warm?
Not without diagnosis. Low charge is only one possible cause, and refrigerant should not be added without identifying system condition and the reason for any loss.
Can I keep resetting the breaker?
No. A breaker that trips again is signaling a problem. Repeated resets can be unsafe and may worsen equipment damage.
